She could see where the rising waters from the creek had already flooded her neighbor\u2019s property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all watch the weather. We\u2019re taught to do that,\u201d Webber said. \u201cYou know when the wind is blowing from the south, the Chinook winds, everything is going to thaw. We\u2019re kind of worried about that, by the way, because it thaws too quick. We have lots of flooding. We don\u2019t want to have it thaw too quick.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A record snowfall hit the reservation this winter. It caused both the Blackfeet Nation and the state of Montana to declare a state of emergency for the region when six-foot snow drifts blocked roads and kept people trapped in their homes. Warmer temperatures in the spring means snow thawing will occur quicker and earlier in the year. That earlier snowmelt means that areas like the Blackfeet Indian Reservation could be facing spring flooding followed by critically low water levels during the late summer months.<\/p>\n<p>The tribe is responding by drafting its own Climate Adaptation Plan, which includes potential solutions to deal with the spring run-off.<\/p>\n<p>Dona Rutherford, director of Tribal Fish and Wildlife, said a question she asks is \u201chow can we keep some of this water that\u2019s going to be melting on? Rushing down the streams and going on past us? They can change this or that, you know, but it\u2019s climate change. It\u2019s here. It\u2019s now, and we\u2019re going after it. He wants to make sure the Blackfeet Nation is informed and prepared for the risks it will face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a plan so people can actually read it and see it and talk about it and have discussions and say, \u2018Well, what can we do?\u2019\u201d Wagner said. \u201c\u2018Well, we can do A, B and C.
