Little Shell

Timothy Ratte

Reporter

I grew up in Connecticut and Massachusetts, both states with American Indian names, but I had little opportunity to experience authentic Indian culture. When I moved to Washington state in 2002, I had my first exposure to Indian culture through the Salish tribe. I am now a senior in UM’s Journalism School. Through the Native News Honors Project, I hope to truly gain perspective on the cultural richness of American Indians’ past, as well as the complexity of contemporary Indian issues. My name is Tim Ratte, and I will be reporting on Montana’s Little Shell Chippewa Tribe.

I am a native Montanan, born in Kalispell, but have lived in Missoula for most of my life. I am currently a senior studying journalism at UM. I feel that being raised in Montana has influenced my perspective on life and instilled in me a great appreciation for the simpler aspects of life.

My goal for the future is to be the best photojournalist I can and to continue to grow and learn about people and their motivations in life. I really love what I have been able to accomplish in photojournalism. I have met some amazing people and have learned a great deal.

I am interested in working on the Native News Honors Project because the true natives of Montana have a rich history and tradition. I am eager to learn about tribal members’ perceptions of how the land is changing and how issues affect them. My name is Tyler Wilson, and I will be photographing Montana’s Little Shell Chippewa Tribe.
