Jacob Baynham
Reporter
To me, the role of a journalist is beautiful in its simplicity. It is about telling stories. Stories that may be remarkable in their outlandishness, or moving in their commonness. Story-telling has been around as long as man could speak, and today’s journalism is no different. But even deeper, journalism is really about people. In writing people’s stories, I seek to join them in celebrating, commiserating and marveling at this wondrous existence in which we find ourselves.
I am a senior in print journalism at the University of Montana’s School of Journalism. Having spent my childhood living in both cities, like Denver, and in other countries, such as India, I have long wanted to know more about the native peoples of this wide and beautiful country, and the Native News Honors Project seemed the perfect way to learn. My name is Jacob Baynham, and I’ll be reporting from Montana’s Crow Reservation.
Adam Sings In The Timber
Photgrapher
Born in Billings, Mont., and raised in Milwaukee, I am Crow and Chippewa Cree. In addition to being a photographer, I am also a musician who specializes in jazz and blues guitar, along with the Native American flute. I am the photo editor for Reznet, an online American Indian student newspaper based at the University of Montana.
I am also president of the UM chapter of the Native American Journalists Association. I want to work on the Native News Honors Project because I have always been interested in telling the story of modern American Indians. I am also excited about traveling to a reservation and covering the positives and negatives of life there. It has always been my goal to step away from the stereotypes of Indians in the media. My name is Adam Sings In The Timber, and I will be photographing on Montana’s Crow Reservation.
