I am a senior majoring in print journalism at the University of Montana. I am also a member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, and though I was raised in a small town in Northern California — Kelseyville — I spent most summers with my father in Lame Deer, Mont., on the reservation.
Throughout my life, I’ve shared both a love for the Northern Cheyenne culture and community, and a dislike for the rampant social problems that plague the reservation — and many reservations in the state — including crime, unemployment and addiction. I look forward to reading stories that might reveal what the Bureau of Indian Affairs is doing to help improve the lives of American Indians in Montana. My name is Ethan Robinson, and I will be copy editing for the Native News Honors Project.

While growing up in Helena, Mont., I always had a peculiar fascination with proper spelling, punctuation and grammar. I never thought this could result in a career until I started studying journalism at the University of Montana. Now a senior in the journalism school, I’ve realized that accuracy and consistency are crucial aspects of any publication.
I’m excited to work as an editor for the Native News Honors Project because not only will I be focusing on the aforementioned aspects of the publication, but I will also be working with reporters to develop their stories and make sure they effectively tell stories of American Indians, a part of Montana’s population whose voices are often unheard.
