For the last 15 years I've had the honor and the pleasure of helping teach the Native News Honors Project class. My role has been more of an overseer than a teacher because the students learn most from one another and from the generous people on Montana's Indian reservations who open their homes and their hearts. It's an unmatched opportunity for these young journalists to examine in-depth the important issues of interest to our state's largest minority population. I'm proud to say that they do magnificent work. I'm Carol Van Valkenburg, a professor in the School of Journalism.

Along with School of Journalism print chair Carol Van Valkenburg, I help create the Native News Honors Project at the University of Montana. I coach the photographers and designers in the class. Each spring we produce a 36-page tabloid publication. Last year we also produced the first Web version of the project as part of the class, and later added audio elements. This is my fifth year with the project. It is my favorite class to teach, in part because the course gives students real-world experience as they tackle important stories that might not otherwise be explored or told. My name is Teresa Tamura, and I am the photo professor for the Native News Honors Project.
